About Benone Strand and Sand Dunes

Benone Strand and Sand Dunes extend approximately seven miles along the north coast of Northern Ireland, situated in County Londonderry near the town of Limavady. It is one of the longest beaches in Northern Ireland, comprising a wide stretch of golden sand backed by extensive, naturally formed sand dunes. The dunes serve as a vital coastal habitat supporting a range of flora and fauna, including seabirds, insects, and specialized dune vegetation. The area’s geography features gently sloping sandy shores that meet the North Atlantic Ocean, providing stunning views toward the Inishowen Peninsula and the distant hills of Donegal across Lough Foyle.

Historically, Benone Strand has been a popular recreational destination, famous for its traditional caravan parks, coastal walks, and proximity to the Causeway Coast’s iconic landmarks such as the Giant’s Causeway. It is recognized for both its natural beauty and its cultural significance in coastal tourism. Visitors enjoy a variety of outdoor activities including beachcombing, swimming, surfing, kite surfing, and birdwatching, while the sand dunes provide opportunities for hiking and nature exploration.

The nearby Roe Valley and Lough Foyle enhance the area’s biodiversity and recreational appeal, making Benone Strand a favored spot for both locals and tourists. Its accessibility via the scenic A2 coastal road adds to its charm, allowing for day trips and extended stays in nearby towns. The protected dunes contribute to coastal erosion control and serve as a living classroom for environmental education, drawing attention from conservation groups and outdoor enthusiasts alike.
